Science Communicators You Should Know

Hello everyone and welcome back to The Friendly Neighborhood Shark Lady! As you may be able to guess, I am extremely passionate about science communication and making science more easily accessible and understandable to the general public. While I hope you are all enjoying my blog and are learning lots, I also know that getting information from a variety of different sources, from people with a variety of different backgrounds, is important to becoming a well-rounded individual. Because of this, today I am going to be sharing some of my favorite science communicators from a few different platforms with you!

TikTok

  • Ariel (@arie.loo): Ariel works at the Lowell Observatory and shares lots of fun space content working with telescopes!

  • Eryn (@erynbroughtabook): now this isn’t strictly science content, but she does share a lot of cool science stuff! Eryn basically shares cool, fun facts that she finds while reading and also shares the books where she finds her interesting facts.

  • Harbor Wild Watch (@harborwildwatch): This group focuses on environmental education and is based in Gig Harbor, Washington. So many pretty nature scenes; I love them!

  • @renegadescienceteacher: He shares lots of fun general science facts.

  • Nick (@zookeepernick): Nick works at a zoo and shares all of the amazing animals he works with!

  • Nermina (@pieceofchemistry): Nermina has a relatively new account, but is sharing her life as a chemistry PhD student. Super cool for a little inside look at what it is like to be a chemist and a student!

  • Sci Show (@scishow): A fantastic account for general science that is really fun (and funny). I cannot recommend this account enough. It is definitely one of my favorites!

  • Neil Thompson (@forestryprof): This account is for all of the tree lovers out there. Neil is a forestry professor at the University of Main Fort Kent and I have learned SO much from him. I always thought forestry would be boring, but he makes it so interesting!

  • Emily Caladrelli (@thespacegal): Emily focuses on outer space, but also throws in a lot of general science. She is AMAZING. She has also written children’s books (Ada Lace series), has a Netflix series (Emily’s Wonder Lab), is a field correspondent on Bill Nye Saves the World, and is an executive producer/host of Xploration Outer Space on Fox. You can also find her on Facebook and Youtube.

  • Hank Green (@hankgreen1): Hank is the brother of author John Green and is an absolutely PHENOMENAL science communicator. He is one of the hosts of Sci Show (on both TikTok and Youtube), Crash Course (on Youtube), as well as a variety of Sci Show spin-off podcasts. Hank Green is hands down one of my favorite science communicators out there.

  • Kellie Gerardi (@kelliegerardi): A fantastic account that shows an insight into what it is like as a woman in STEM. Kellie works in aerospace and has also recently written a book (Not Necessarily Rocket Science).

  • National Marine Life Center (@nationalmarinelifecenter): this is a marine animal rehab facility that shares lots of cool information about the animals they help rescue and re-release.

  • ASAP Science (@asapscience): Fair warning, their content is more directed towards adults at times, but they are still a really good source for general science information.

  • Phillip Cook (@chemteacherphil): This is another of my favorite accounts. Phillip is a chemistry teacher sharing all kinds of super cool chemistry experiments and facts. He makes me miss chemistry class...almost.

Netflix:

  • Emily’s Wonder Lab: Fun STEAM activities and experiments that you can do at home!

  • Bill Nye Saves the World: Directed at the kids who grew up with Bill Nye the Science Guy at school, this one is more geared for adults, but is still amazing.

  • Mission Blue: Now this is a documentary that I watch over and over. It tells the story of Dr. Sylvia Earle (one of my personal science heroes) and her journey to becoming one of the top marine scientists in the world and her mission to save our oceans.

Instagram:

  • Corina Newsome (@hood_naturalist): Corina is a birder and wildlife conservationist sharing her story of being a wildlife enthusiast as a black woman.

  • Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson (@ayanaeliza): Dr. Johnson is a marine biologist who focuses on policy. She is also a host of the podcast How2SaveAPlanet which focuses on solutions to climate change.

  • Dr. Stephanie Ryan (@letslearnaboutscience): Dr. Ryan shares some really cool science activities that she does with her young son. She is also a children’s book author. Her most recent title is “Let’s Learn About Chemistry”.

  • Dr. Mike (@theenglishscientist): Dr. Mike specializes in neuroscience and shares some really cool brain facts!

Podcasts:

  • Ologies: Hands down, this is my all-time favorite podcast. Allie Ward interviews a different “ologist” every week and makes even the most boring sounding topics so much fun to learn about. She does tend to use some adult language, but you can find clean episodes on the Ologies website if any little ears want to listen.

  • Science VS: This podcast tackles a wide variety of topics and looks into the science behind them. Science VS is what got me into listening to podcasts and I can’t recommend it enough.

Thank you for hanging out with me today. Who are some of your favorite science communicators? I always love finding new communicators to learn from! You will have to let me know if you check any of these guys out, which I highly recommend you do, and what you think! I’ll see you all back here Friday for another fascinating Finn Friday!
